DISPOSABLE PEOPLE
by Andrew Williams
Walk alone along any street, highway or beltway in any city or town with a
population of 50,000 plus and you will see who we really are under all the
flags, patriotic hymns, bumper stickers, balloons and bunting. We are
disposable people: workers to be tested, hired, fired, chewed up and spat
out by Moloch; guinea pigs and cannon fodder for pharmaceutical concerns
and deliberately misguided patriotism. You will also see in the detritus
that our food and fun are equally disposable.
It comes as no news to awake people that the subcutaneous media have been
aware of this pogrom for decades, and even some "mainstream" artists have
been warning their listeners about this pathetic state of affairs. The two
that leap readily to mind are Eminem and Marilyn Manson. Officially,
they're targeted for their politi-culturally incorrect language, but the
hidden agenda against them, I believe, is directly related to their
putting forth the "disposable teens" message. Back in the 1960's, people
called that level of communication "telling it like it is."
Our task as true Americans--those who believe, as Thoreau did, "that
government governs best, which governs least"--is to become indigestible,
to give megacorporations and governments stomach pains, acid reflux and
allergic reactions. "Be sand, not oil, in the machinery of the world,"
Gunter Eich urges us, perhaps inspired by Chaplin's monkey-wrenching in
"Modern Times."
Although I am becoming increasingly loath to suggest courses of action in
this Kulturkampf, I will offer some general suggestions to those who want
or need them. (Warning to regular readers: This list expands on the list
of suggestions in my Bucky Fuller essay.)
--Listen only to artists who support the rights of the individual. (Make
your own list.)
--Buy local, support local--Ma and Pa, small chain, organic. (I make an
exception for Trader Joe's for their good organic foods selection and low
prices. However, I have come to learn that at least one of their cereals
contains gengineered foodstuff and since there's no labeling requirement
for gengineered food--caveat emptor.)
--Use homeopathic and other natural remedies available at health food
stores, especially those from organic sources. However, do consult with a
medical professional who is versed in alternative treatment modalities
beforehand.
--Subvert corporate advertising. Talk back to TV--or kill it. Speak with
political incorrectness. Indulge in cognitive dissonance. Answer the phone
with a funny voice.
--Support your mind with positive self-talk, using methods such as
neuro-linguistic programming, creative visualizations, etc.
It takes a lot of willpower and fortitude--more than most people
possess--not to be a disposable person. e.e.cummings succinctly stated the
case when he wrote, "To be nobody-but-yourself--in a world which is doing
its best, night and day, to make you somebody else--means to fight the
hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting."
So take care of yourselves, and love yourselves, so you can love others
and they, in turn, can spread "the conspiracy of love" around the world.
